medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today's ODNB Life of the Day is Marjorie Chibnall's biography of Matilda
[Matilda of England] (1102-1167), empress, consort of Heinrich V, the elder
of two children and only legitimate daughter of Henry I (1068/9-1135), king
of England, and his first wife Matilda (1080-1118), the daughter of Malcolm
III, king of Scots.
It's a fascinating story politically, of course, but of interest to this
list for a number of reasons - her devotion to Anselm and Bec, negotiations
with Frederick Barbarossa over the relic of St James' hand, patronage of new
religious orders, expressed views on the constitutions of Clarendon, etc.
