Writing to draw your attention to a new report on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons. Unspeakable Suffering: The Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons was launched today by Reaching Critical Will, a project of the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom.
Prepared for the upcoming United Nations conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons sponsored by Norway (in Oslo, March 4-5) this accessible summation of cutting edge science is meant to educate and inform a broad international public. Chapters review the human health and the environmental impacts of nuclear militarism (including a focus on climate change) and include case studies on Japan and the Marshall Islands. Edited by Beatrice Fihn, with chapters by Ray Acheson, John Burroughs, Lloyd J. Dumas, Ira Hefland, Barbara R. Johnston, Patricia Lewis, Magnus Løvold, Teresa D. Nelson, M.V. Ramana, Felicity Ruby, Tilman Ruff and Masao Tomonaga the report can be downloaded here: http://www.reachingcriticalwill.org/resources/publications-and-research/publications/7422-unspeakable-suffering-the-humanitarian-impact-of-nuclear-weapons
The Marshall Islands summation contains material from my work with the UN Special Rapporteur for Toxic Waste and Environmental Contamination and contributions to the September 2012 meeting of the Human Rights Council.
Also, if anyone is able and interested, there is a civil society forum on March 2-3, 2013 in Oslo, with workshops, panels, and other activities meant to demonstrate to the world that banning nuclear weapons is both possible and urgently needed. The civil society forum is organized by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). To register: http://www.goodbyenuk.es/index.php?p=register
Please help spread the word - this report is VERY student-friendly...
