medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Lisa, and welcome to the list!
In purely 'literary' usage, I have found a couple of relevant articles:
Gunilla Iversen, “Psallite regi nostro, psallite”: singing 'allelui' in ninth-century poetry.' In *Sapientia et Eloquentia. Meaning and Function in Liturgical Poetry, Music, Drama, and Biblical Commentary in the Middle Ages, ed. Gunilla Iversen and Nicolas Bell. Disputatio, 11. Turnhout: Brepols, 2009, p. 9-58.
Daniel J. Sheerin, 'John Leland and Milred of Worcester.' Manuscripta 21 (1977) 172-180
But given the colossal importance of this term, and the way they would not in the Middle Ages have compartmentalized such usages into areas we today would call 'literature', you might find something useful in one of the following:
A.E. Planchart, 'Proses in the sources of Roman chant and their Alleleuias.' In *The Study of Medieval Chant. Paths and Bridges, East and West. In Honour of Kenneth Levy*, ed. Peter Jeffery. Cambridge: D.S. Brewer, 2001, p.313-339.
Sarah Long, 'In praise of St. Nicholas. Music, text, and spirituality in the masses and offices of Parisian trade confraternity manuscripts'. *Journal of the Alamire Foundation* 1 (2009) 50-78.
James McKinnon, 'Preface to the study of the Alleluia'. *Early Music History* 15 (1996) 213-249.
A. Verheul, 'La place et la signification de l'alléluia dans la célébration eucharistique'. *Questions liturgiques* 76 (1995) 42-58.
I am sure others on the list will have other sources and studies for you.
Best wishes, George

I'm trying to look at the use of the word Hallelujah (or its variants, alleluia, alleluya) in medieval literature (early through late, religious or secular), but I'm having a heck of a time finding anything. I can't find any secondary sources and I've only found a few primary sources. Does anyone know any works that use the term? Please feel free to reply privately.
