The School of Arts, Design and Architecture is an institution of higher education for design, media, architecture, motion picture, art education and art. The new school, formed in a merger of the School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture of the School of Engineering, will carry forward the internationally recognized expertise created by its predecessors.
The Department of Architecture at the Aalto University, is the oldest and largest of the three schools of architecture in Finland. Its age marks an exceptionally long tradition even internationally. Since 1872, the architectural education in Finland has followed the European tradition of architectural education as part of the technical sciences. During the last decade, the department has strengthened its research activity and doctoral education to meet the future challenges of architecture and planning.
The Department of Architecture is looking for a
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER in the field of theory of architecture
for a 2-year-period starting on January 1st 2013 or as agreed.
Theory of architecture is an academic discipline informed by interdisciplinary studies e.g. in humanities, social sciences and cultural studies. It holds a specific relationship to architecture as an artistic, technical and pragmatic discipline, taking a critical and hermeneutic attitude towards architecture and its social and cultural context. Theory is not limited to any one field of architectural research, such as history or interpretation of seminal works, but it should strive to encourage critical analysis and in-depth understanding within the whole discipline. It is also a very international field within architectural research, and thus international contacts and experience are most welcome. In the Department of Architecture, the post of the post-doctoral researcher is located in a team of Urban Landscapes, consisting of four professors and their lecturers and researchers representing urban planning and design, housing design, and landscape planning. However, the person employed is expected to cooperate widely with the other professors and researchers of the Department, and also across other departments and schools of Aalto University.
The purpose of postdoctoral research is to support and strengthen research at the Department of Architecture. Postdoctoral researcher’s duties include research and teaching related to the research field. Postdoctoral researchers also participate in the preparation of research projects and search for funding. Administrative duties in the development of research and teaching can also be part of the job description.
An expeditiously and successfully gained doctoral degree within the last 5 years in a relevant research field is required. Applicants’ research potential and merits will be given particular emphasis during the selection process. The salary is determined based on experience and qualifications according to the salary system of Aalto University.
