The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), based in Trondheim, is the
central national institute for knowledge of bedrock, mineral resources,
surface deposits, and groundwater of mainland Norway and of the
near-surface geology of the Norwegian continental shelf. The Survey's
tasks include geological, geophysical and geochemical mapping,
development and maintenance of databases, research, information
activities, and advice to governmental bodies and industry. NGU’s staff
of 220 includes representatives of 25 nationalities. 65% of the staff

The Geodynamics Team at NGU (www.geodynamics.no) invites applicants for
a 3 year post-doctoral fellowship in 40Ar/39Ar thermochronology. In
close collaboration with other teams at NGU, we investigate tectonic
processes and their effects on local to global scales using a
combination of geodynamic modeling, structural geology, geochronology,
seismic interpretation, and GIS analysis. The team oversees operation of
an automated 40Ar/39Ar laboratory consisting of a MAP 250-50 mass
spectrometer, dual laser system (New Wave), furnace and an adopted
extraction line.
We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with expertise in
low-temperature thermochronology, with particular emphasis on
the40Ar/39Ar system. The successful candidate must have a strong
background in Earth Sciences, and experience with pre-analytical work
such as mineral characterization (e.g., SEM) and mineral separation.
Experience in field-based structural geology, knowledge of mass
spectrometry and Labview programming would be beneficial, but not
required. Experience in day-to-day laboratory operations and instrument
maintenance would be highly advantageous.
Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. education at the time the
position starts.
