Dear Julie Curl,
Here are some measurements that may help you:
RefColl# sex GL Bp SC/KC Bd Locality
1054 m 1647 268 92 278 Mertola
377 f 1157 179 58 191 Mertola
1055 m - - 89 283 Mertola
2294 m? 1215 196 71 206 Castro Verde/Beja
Measurements in tenths of a millimetre of tarsometatarsals of four Great
bustards, Otis tarda. All are from the Alentejo in southern Portugal. The
measurement abbreviations follow Driesch (1976) – note that KC is the German
equivalent for SC – minimum shaft width.
I have doubts about the sex of specimen 2294. It was apparently sexed in the
field and the finder mentions that it had probably died some 2 weeks
previously.
We have a few more skeletons of Great bustard but they are in store in
another part of town. If you need these desperately, I can try and get them
but it will be a while before I can do this.
Best wishes,
Simon Davis

Assunto: [ZOOARCH] Great Bustard measurements
Dear All,
Would anyone be able to provide measurements for the Gt Bustard
tarsometatarus? Known males\females would be useful.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Best wishes, Julie
