medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

thanks for this, Jim.
does she discuss these "typological" pairings which you mentioned in the
Theodore Psalter?
(or, does anyone know of a more extensive discussion of this kind of
inherently exegetical presentation of images --in any medium, East or West?)
just a reminder, btw, that the BL site doesn't make it clear, but the few
thumbnails which show up on any ms's main page, e.g.,
http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/FullDisplay.aspx?ref=Add_MS_19352
are not at all the only images of it available on the site.
the *whole* ms. is there for viewing (or, tediously, for downloading).
this can be seen by clicking on any of the thumbnails and going directly to
the ms.
http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/Viewer.aspx?ref=add_ms_19352_f001r
once there, one can page through the whole thing by hitting the arrows at the
upper right (changing the "view" to "Open Book" is quicker, if you are only
interested in the folios with illuminations).
once you've got an image you can do a "Print Screen" on it, which copies it to
the clipboard, and then download that image to a blank page in Photo- or
PaintShop.
you can enlarge the image to whatever size you wish before doing the Save
Screen (a *nice* feature, not always available on the BNF.fr site).
this is tedious to do, but, theoretically, the whole ms. *could* be downloaded
this way.

Fascinating, Jim; thank you! I'm interested to learn more about this sort of
codex, that pairs images in this manner. As I'm a 'Westerner', I'll start by
looking in the West.

Theodore Psalter is one of a group of "marginal psalters" whose images are
quite complex. Not only does one of the images on each page usually comment
on accompanying text passages from the relevant psalm, but they are also
usually paired with a typological image that sometimes simply pairs an New
Testament and and Old Testament image, but also sometimes pairs a biblical or
saintly image with one relating to more recent events. In particular, there
are some very interesting anti-iconoclastic images in these manuscripts, most
famously, perhaps, the Chludov Psalter, but also including the Theodore
Psalter, which in its on-line form gives by far the best visual access to this
group of manuscripts.

the acquiistion campaign; I was surprised to find the Theodore Psalter as the
fourth-most consulted manuscript, though -- my surprise is probably due to my
ignorance of medieval Greek codicology. Can anyone account for this
(apparently, to me) disproportionate interest?
