Today (26. October) is also the feast day of:
Aphthonius of Angoulême (d. ca. 566). Aphthonius (also Aphtonius; in French, Aptone) is thought to have been been elected bishop of Angoulême in about 541. In 549 he participated in the fifth council of Orléans. The ninth-century Vita of St. Eparchius (BHL 2559), the eponym of Angoulême's abbey of Saint-Cybard, has bishop Aphthonius grant permission to Eparchius, then a monk, to become a recluse at a cave on the site of what would become the abbey; the same Vita has him ordain Eparchius priest. The inventive Adémar of Chabannes, who had been a monk of Saint-Cybard before moving to Saint-Martial in Limoges, says that Aphthonius, who had been chaplain to Clovis, became bishop of Angoulême after his prayers had caused the city to surrender to surrender to the Frankish king. An even less plausible development of Aphthonius' legend has him baptized by St. Martial and, after he had become bishop, martyred by Vandals during their invasion of the Visigothic kingdom.

John Dillon
