Dear Esra:
I have three suggestions:
1) Klaus Krippendorff and Reinhart Butter, "Product Semantics:
Exploring the Symbolic Qualities of Form," in which the authors argue
that "Probably the most noteworthy development in design today [i.e.,
1984]...is its concern for the cognitive meanings, symbolic functions
and cultural histories of form." It is in *Innovation* vol. 3, no. 2
(spring 1984), approximately pp. 4-9.
2) I am also very fond of Dieter Rams's 1984 statement "Omit the
Unimportant" from the first issue of *Design Issues* (spring 1984).
I've always liked the way he talks about function and the way that
stylishness or modishness can undermine it, if only by being
distracting or too attention-getting.
3) If you are interested in reading some of the "greatest hits" from
the past about the issue of function (including excerpts of the
above), you could refer to the index of my Industrial Design Reader
(Allworth, 2003) and read the items that are listed under "function"
and "functionalism." There are quite a few, and this is a quick way to
get a sense of the varied ways in which designers and other
commentators on design have understood the notion of "function"
differently over time.
