Hi, Don,
Despite Listserv's occasionally defects, the system actually works well across a wide variety of platforms. Subscribers simply go to the PhD-Design home page at
https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/phd-design
At the top of the page there is an options bar. The left-most button reads
Subscribe or Unsubscribe<https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?SUBED1=PHD-DESIGN&X=00EB111AD2466515B6&Y=kenfriedman%40swin.edu.au>
Clicking that button takes subscribers to a screen that shows them how to unsubscribe.
Attachments are not politically sensitive. The prohibition on attachments has to do with the fact that Listserv does not send attachments to digest subscribers. It breaks them into Code — a large attachment adds page after after of alphanumeric code to the digest while one-by-one subscribers get the attachments attached.
The footer would be easy — Something like:
"To join or leave this list, go to URL: https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/phd-design and click on the option bar Subscribe or Unsubscribe choice."
But I must apologize. I was having a bad Outlook day and I did not answer rapidly enough, forcing Keith (our valiant list owner) to jump in where I would otherwise send a cheerful and courteous note. Fortunately, as list owner, Keith is empowered to make new rules. And as a philosopher, the knowledge of how to subscribe or unsubscribe would be just the thing he'd want to reflect on.
And now you see what kinds of things we mull over when we're up at 5:54 am in Melbourne on a chilly morning in later winter.
Yours,
Ken

Oh. that's not how I thought it was done. I that that here is the way to
unsubscribe.
1. Write a note to the list asking to be unsubscribed
2. Ken responds with instructions.
3. you follow Ken's instructions.
Keith is violating the rule!
BUT, while I have Keith's attention. Some time ago I pointed out that
whoever is in charge of this list has the capability to add a footer on
each mail (automatically) with any message desired, such as How To
Unsubscribe. The list could also be modified to accept attachments, but
that seems politically sensitive.
