Subject: APPRENTICESHIP: VOLUNTEERING FOR SHROPSHIRE'S HERITAGE
Hello everyone: Volunteering for Shropshire's Heritage is an exciting three year long HLF funded project working across Shropshire Council museums and archives to catalogue, conserve, digitise, research and promote the county's outstanding heritage. The vacancy for the second of the project apprenticeships has just been advertised. I would be very grateful if you could bring it to the attention of anyone you think might be interested in joining our friendly team. The post would particularly suit a non graduate with an interest in history, museums and archives. Details are at http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/vacancies.nsf/(viewAll)/CEB413C71B752D9380257A5A007CFF8F. Closing date is Tuesday 28th August.
With many thanks and best wishes

Subject: Job Opportunity: Bank of England Archive Assistant
Archive Assistant – Bank of England
Salary: £22,000
Location: London
51 week fixed term contract
This new post is designed as post-graduate internship for someone with a good first degree who is looking for a range of experience before undertaking a qualification in Archives. It is a fixed term contract from October 2012 to September 2013.
Based in Threadneedle Street, the Bank of England holds one of the finest business archives in the county which is of national and international importance. Holding over 80,000 items which date from when the Bank was established in 1694, the Archive is open to the public from Monday to Thursday and is heavily used. The current Archive team comprises three professional Archivists and an Historian.
The Archive is part of the new Information and Records Management team within Information Systems and Technology Division. The team also includes the Information Centre, Bank Records and Knowledge Management functions along with the EDRM System Administrative team. Please note that while the Archive has input into records management at the Bank, it has no direct responsibility for it.
We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic person to join the Bank’s Archive team and support the work of the professional staff. The post holder will assist in running the public research services, which involves supervision, responding to written and telephone enquiries and the retrieval of material from the onsite strongrooms. As the Archive undertakes a wide range of work and is very busy, it is essential that the post holder can work with minimal supervision when necessary, but can also work as part of the team. There will be opportunities to participate in all aspects of the day to day work including: reviewing; cataloguing using CALM; conservation; a range of work designed to improve the Archive profile; outreach activities include helping to prepare for and host occasional group visits and contributing ideas to improve the Archive’s web presence. The Archive works closely with other areas of the Bank, answering enquiries and undertaking research where necessary. The post involves working with highly confidential material and dealing with a wide range of people, including senior members of the Bank’s staff.
Appropriate training will be given and there will be opportunities to attend archive related events.
The closing date for applications is 2 September. Interviews will be held during the week beginning 10 September.

Subject: Archives New Zealand: news from the Christchurch Office
List serve members may recall that I posted news from New Zealand Archives
in Christchurch in the aftermath of the earthquake of 2010 and later
aftershocks. I have just had an update from Chris Adam, the Regional
Archivist, where his service is continuing to deliver a service under
difficult conditions.
"We managed to get back in and start salvage work a week after last
February's shake and were able to open to the public at the beginning of
June 2011 once the cordon had withdrawn behind our street. The shelving
suffered further damage in the June and December aftershocks, however. The
reading room is open only half-days - 9.30am to 1pm, partly because of the
difficulties of access to the palletised material and that stored off-site.
Our written reference service has continued more or less unaffected since
the quake. Late last year we began a project with FamilySearch to digitise
all of our probate records - several hundred thousand - and this is taking
up a fair bit of our staff resource. We are also using the opportunity
afforded by our reduced reading room hours to do more work with smaller
archives in the region and this will increase later in the year. So while we
may be crippled, we are not dead in the water. We should find out shortly
the fate of our building. At the very least the floor will need to be
completely replaced, and we will possibly need piles driven down to the
nearest firm gravel bed, some 20 metres below us. And the southwest wall
needs jacking up in some way. This is not a great prospect, as we have to
move everything out of the building only to bring it back in a year later.
Our hope is that we do not need to undertake this work, and can stay on in
the building until new accommodation is built elsewhere. At the moment we
are investigating the possibility of a new joint facility in a prime
location on the campus of the University of Canterbury, which we would share
with the university's McMillan Brown Library and possibly some other local
archives institutions. So our hopes are firmly on this."

Subject: 'Archive Pace Setters' scheme - last chance to apply [UNCLASSIFIED]
Apologies for cross-posting
This is a last call for applications to the Archive Pace Setters scheme.
The Archive Pace Setters scheme is led by the Archives and Records Association in partnership with The National Archives, the Scottish Council on Archives, and the Welsh Assembly Government, and is aimed at encouraging innovative projects within the UK archive sector
The scheme has been running since October 2009 and final applications must be submitted by the end of September 2012. Any project you are putting forward as an Archive Pace Setter must be completed and evaluated by March 2013 at the latest. [NB: You cannot apply for Archive Pace Setter status for projects already completed]
For more details about the scheme and how to apply see - http://www.archives.org.uk/campaigns/archive-pace-setter-scheme.html
A full evaluation of the programme will be made available in Summer 2013 and this will feed into the future work of the Archives and Records Association and other strategic partners involved in the programme.

THE keeper of the Scottish Catholic Archives has revealed he feels positive
that the collection will remain in the Capital.
Andrew Nicoll has spoken for the first time about the dispute over the
archives’ future – which has seen leading church figures and historians at
loggerheads with the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland.

basically treats DNA as just another digital storage device. Instead of
binary data being encoded as magnetic regions on a hard drive platter,
strands of DNA that store 96 bits are synthesized, with each of the bases
(TGAC) representing a binary value (T and G = 1, A and C = 0).

Nanoprinter Achieves Insane Resolution : Discovery News
Great things come in small packages: data storage for digital files,
anti-counterfeiting microtext, even intricate microimages. Now the packages
have gotten even smaller. An accidental discovery led materials scientists
to achieve 100,000 dots per inch, 10 times the previous record for
high-resolution color printing. (Magazines typically print images at 300
dots per inch.)
