Never discount the inventiveness of university and college Development Offices. It's standard in the U.S. for such fundraising arms to consider everyone who has ever matriculated at their institution as an alumnus / alumna and fairly common to assign those who did not proceed to a degree to a class in which they would have graduated had they proceeded in the normal course (thus simplifying one aspect of the annual giving appeals).
