Hi Linda,

Your colleagues in ICT will be concerned about security and, no doubt, have the various implications of the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Act in mind. There's also the possibility that your ICT department may have to comply with higher security condition than apply to us if they connect to the government secure networks.

Our trial system did require people to apply for an account but we have recently decided to remove the requirement for identification and allow anonymous access. The thinking behind this is that the risk of abuse, while still present, appears to be low and, in any case, without sophisticated systems, checking the that the user is who they say they are isn't easy. I'm always surprised at the number of "comic" login names we get even from supposedly professional organisations. We can't afford the sort of system that checks identity via mobile telephone numbers.

We will still apply controls to the systems in that we restrict the bandwidth available to anonymous users and tie down access hours to Museum opening hours. We log sites accessed against the hardware address of the device but it's not our intention to monitor those unless someone reports abuse. We are not removing accounts completely as these will allow staff access for longer hours and higher bandwidth.

Terms and condition are the key and if you want a copy of ours let me know.

John
