This is a very interesting example of a measure which does not appeare in
Colin R Chapman's 'How Heavy, how much, and how long?: weights, money and
other measures used by our ancestors'. Lochin Publishing (1995), which I
recommend to all who do not know it as a very interesting read. From it we
learn that there were such things as 'hop acres', i.e. a piece of land that
would support 1000 hop plants. Maybe a potato rood is a piece of land which
would support a certain number of potato plants.

Subject: Potato roods
I've recently catalogued a map showing leasehold land in Harborne (then
Staffordshire) in 1827, with land parcel areas shown in roods and quarter
roods. The anonymous surveyor has added the note "The land is cast up in
potato roods of 64 square yards". I haven't been able to find any other
reference to "potato roods". Has anyone else experienced them?
