School of Design, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8ST, UK
£60 for two day conference
The Design PhD conference offers an opportunity for PhD students, Masters students, recent graduates and businesses to meet, exchange knowledge and ideas, and learn about the latest developments in design thinking, methods and research projects.
The aim of this conference is to facilitate debate and the sharing of experiences concerning practice led research 'for', 'into', and 'through' designing. As well as exploring the nature of communities involved. At this conference 'designing' will be defined as developing and organising greater benefit in our creative processes and the outcomes.
The Design PhD Conference is a collaborative event between the School of Design, Northumbria University and ImaginationLancaster at Lancaster University.
KEYNOTE
Professor Ilpo Koskinen will provide the keynote presentation to launch this year's Design PhD Conference. Professor Koskinen's keynote will discuss alternative ways of building research on design practice, using examples from several fields of design and underlining the importance of practice to research in design.
Ilpo Koskinen was a sociologist, but has worked as a professor of industrial design since 1999. His main research interests have been in mobile multimedia, the relationship of design and cities, and interpretive design methodology. Some of his main publications include Mobile Image (IT Press, Helsinki, 2002), Empathic Design (IT Press, Helsinki, 2003), and Mobile Multimedia in Action (Transaction Publishers, New Brunswick, NJ, 2007). Most recently, he has published "Design Research through Practice. From Lab, Field, Showroom," a book on constructive design research (Morgan Kaufman, San Francisco, 2011). This book explicates recent developments in contemporary design research by focusing on their methodological foundations, whether they come from the sciences, the social sciences, or art and design.
