medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
a friend of mine kindly sent me the link to this video,
http://www.ted.com/talks/william_noel_revealing_the_lost_codex_of_archimedes.html
which describes the restoration of the Archimedes palimpsest, which was
spearheaded by William Noel, Curator of Manuscripts and Rare Books at the
Walters Art Museum.
the ancient Greek texts are not middlevil, of course, but the technical
accomplishment of getting down to them might of considerable interest to some
here, i believe.
here's Noel's site on the Archimedies ms.
http://archimedespalimpsest.org/
his ideas about making (eventually) all manuscripts, in all libraries,
everywhere, available on the web are definitely worth a look.
he apparently has this really Weird hallucination that “The Web of ancient
manuscripts of the future isn't going to be built by institutions. It's going
to be built by users ... people who just want to curate their own glorious
selection of beautiful things.”
yeah, well, Good Luck with that one.
but, it looks like he's into Practicing what he's Preaching.
here's the "Digital Walters" site he's put together
http://www.thedigitalwalters.org/
which contains these (all??) Walters mss.
http://www.thedigitalwalters.org/01_ACCESS_WALTERS_MANUSCRIPTS.html
they're not just there, en principe, but the images all appear to be available
in a legible size (Eat your Heart Out, Bibliotheque Nationale!) and may be
downloaded for One's very Own, suitable for framing.
here's Durer's "Small Passion"

in image sizes ranging from thumbnails to 300+mb, including
The Hapless Couple
