medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
apologies for cross-posting
I have just posted another four pages of images to my online archive,
for three objects and one group:
a small cross in Sens, 8th-9th c., with geometric interlace on the ends
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/SensCross.html
the rider in the Louvre (Charles the Bald or Charlemagne?)
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/CarolingianRider.html
the Guelph Cross in Berlin, 11th-12th c. depending on whom you believe,
with a pseudo-Byzantine enamel in the center
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/GuelphCross.html
and a group of vestments said to have been worn by Thomas Becket, some
of which are apparently early enough that they might actually have been his
http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/VestmentsBecket.html
Thanks to those of you who helped me identify the individual items--
vestments are not my forte, and if I still have some labels wrong,
corrections are of course welcome, as are comments on dates.
Looking again at the Louvre rider, I am suddenly struck by how much the
crown resembles those on the seals of Louis the German. (Charles the
Bald wears no crown on his seals, the image that might be him on the
Ellwangen Casket has an entirely different type of crown, and the crowns
in his manuscript images mostly strike me as rather fanciful.) You can
compare these on my earlier 'crowns' page

Any thoughts?
regards,
Genevra
