medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks, John. It was an extraordinarily interesting project (I took part in a couple of the St Fagans sessions). To be honest I think it was geared to the higher end of parish worship - we didn't learn as much as I'd hoped about the practicalities of liturgy in a small and impoverished parish church - but it was very illuminating nevertheless.
One thing that emerged that I hadn't expected. I spent a couple of days as a disruptive elderly pilgrim trying to recreate the sort of atmosphere that we deduce from literature telling people what not to do - gossip, argue, tell jokes etc. It got quite noisy when the lady of the manor sent someone to tell me off. We apologised to the chancel group afterwards and they assured us they'd been quite unaware of the standup row going on. Did the rood screen function as much as anything else to insulate the priest from distracting goings-on in the nave?

It isn't my responsibility to mention this, but there's a chance that if
I don't do it, no-one else will:
The Ecclesiological Society's conference this year on Saturday 6 October
2012 in London is "The Experience of Worship in the Late Medieval Parish
Church and Cathedral" based on the "Experience of Worship" project which
is centred on St Teilo's Church and Salisbury Cathedral. Details on the
Ecclesiological Society website.
(The Ecclesiological Society has the strapline "Successor to the
Cambridge Camden Society of 1839" - which it isn't, of course.)
