medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Of course I know, Paul, that St Sebastian is one of the plague saints, but
the article indicated that this was because arrow wounds reminded medieval
people of buboes. That's (probably) not the reason he was seen as such,
because arrows have been seen as symbols of the punishments for (human)
sins.
When I read that the pages with the pincushion saint being dirtier than the
rest I immediately thought that this could be not so much devotional but
erotically charged. But maybe that's my dirty mind. Hence the question if
these books were posessed by females.

Thanks Paul, that was fascinating!
Re St Sebastian - I thought he was the plague saint because he didn't
actually die of his arrow wounds (but rather of a later clubbing), and so
was a good role model for those wishing to recover from nasty buboes...
Cheers,
Anna
