The Department of Geosciences and Geography of the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is Finland’s top research and education
institute in its field. The Department engages in geological, geographical and seismological research and handles official duties
related to seismology. It has an overall budget of EUR 8 million and a staff of 110.
The Department of Geosciences and Geography invites applications for the position of
UNIVERSITY LECTURER
for a permanent appointment as of 1 August 2012, or as agreed. The field of the position is structural geology.
The appointee's duties will include conducting research in structural geology, imparting education based on it and overseeing instruction in
geology-related geoinformatics.
The university lecturer will also be in charge of developing geoinformatics and 3D modelling for the needs of geology education and
research. The appointee will participate in geology field education and develop digital methods for it. The university lecturer is
expected to demonstrate a solid research background in the field of structural geology as well as experience in the use of geographic
information systems (GIS) and related instruction. The appointee must also be able to provide English-language instruction.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a university lectureship shall hold an applicable
doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.
When assessing the qualifications of the applicants, attention shall be paid to scientific publications and other research results of
scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if
necessary, a teaching demonstration.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, university lecturers are required to be proficient in Finnish. They must also
have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not
been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.
The salary will be based on levels 5–7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish
universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. There is a four-month
trial period for the position.

assessment of teaching skills, as well as other documents that may be relevant to the selection; or alternatively, an academic portfolio
