Dear Colleagues,
we are pleased to advertise the scientific session listed below, organized at 86° Congresso Nazionale della Società Geologica Italiana, 18-20 September 2012 (Rende , Cosenza - ITALIA) http://http://www.sgi2012.unical.it
The deadline for abstract submission is 30 April 2012.
Session TS2.2 - Paleoseismicity of the Mediterranean Region and surface faulting hazard in urban areas
Conveners: Cinti F., Cucci L., Michetti A.M., De Martini P.M., Roberts G.
Description of the session: The 2011 was marked by destructive seismic events in New Zealand and Japan. These events and their impact were "unexpected", occurring on a previously unknown fault crossing an urban area and based on an underestimation of tsunami potential, respectively. The scenarios of destruction remarked the need of the convergence of accurate historical, geological, and paleoseismic detection to evidence pre-instrumental traces of the earthquakes effects and raises again the discussion among seismologists, geologists and engineers on the most effective strategies and methodologies to adopt for an always more complete knowledge of the earthquakes sources, and for the risks mitigation induced by seismic releases on civil buildings, critical social structure and infrastructures. This session invites contributions on co-seismic deformation studies within urban areas, including both the direct and indirect coseismic effects (i.e. surface faulting, tsunami inundation, uplift and subsidence, liquefaction, landslides) repeatedly affecting the whole Mediterranean area, and on the evaluation of the associated hazard through different techniques of investigation and monitoring (geological, paleo- and archeo-seismological, geophysical, geotechnical, and remote sensing). A discussion on the existing laws for land planning is also promoted. The high seismic hazard of Calabria brings these issues to a critical level of attention, then case of studies in this region are solicited among other critical cases of the Mediterranean region where intense urbanization is strongly developed in internal and coastal portion.
