medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Herewith a link to an earlier 'Saints of the day' for 29. February (on the lower portion of the page; including pope St. Hilarus; St. Oswald of Worcester; Bl. Antonia of Florence):

Further to Antonia of Florence:
In that earlier post's notice of this Beata, the four links to views of the earlier sixteenth-century paintings on the dividing wall in the convent church of Santa Chiara (a.k.a. chiesa della Beata Antonia) in L'Aquila's _frazione_ of Paganica no longer function. Use these instead:

In the same notice, the first link to brief videos of earthquake destruction in Paganica is now a link not to the second but rather to the only video on its page. And the video once led to by the second link is no longer available in that venue.
Today (29. February) is also a feast day of:
Dositheus of Gaza (d. ca. 530). We know about this holy monk who died young from his Bios by his mentor, St. Dorotheus of Gaza (BHG 2117, 2118, 2119; Latin version: BHL 2334). According to Dorotheus, Dositheus came from a well to do pagan family and was in the service of an army officer when, having heard from servants that Jerusalem was a holy city, he went there and at Gethsemane found himself struck by a painting of hell. An elderly woman explained to him the painting's burden. When Dositheus then asked how one could avoid eternal damnation she responded that one should fast, abstain from meat, and pray constantly. And then she disappeared. Moved by this encounter, Dositheus converted to Christianity and applied to be a monk at the community near Gaza headed by St. Seridus. There he was placed in the charge of St. Dorotheus, who guided his ascetic development and aided him in controlling his temper.
After five years of increasing perfection, during which time he labored in the monastery's infirmary, Dorotheus fell fatally ill. He bore his malady in prayerful patience and died with the blessing of St. Barsanuphius of Gaza. Not long afterward a practiced ascetic was granted a vision of the saints of the monastery in heaven. One of these was Dositheus. Thus far Dorotheus of Gaza.
Dositheus has yet to grace pages of the RM. Roman Catholics who venerate him tend to commemorate him on 23. February. In some Orthodox churches he is commemorated on 19. February but at least one (the Église Orthodoxe de France) commemorates him today.
Best,
John Dillon
