Hi Ann,
One of the most significant issues seems to be to teach the
counter-intuitive aspects supported by hard evidence.
This often contradicts current 'green' perspectives. Examples:
For example:
1. Solar on each house is a much worse design solution (wastes government
resources and causes more waste) than centralised large scale solar
collection.
2. Local rainwater collection is worse design solution than large scale
centralised (health issues from tank contamination)
3. Planting large trees increases carbon immisions rather than reduces them
(they reduce carbon absorption into soil - the main carbon reduction
mechanism. Small bushes are better)
4. Steel is the crucial material
5. Risks from nuclear are less (though more catastrophic) than coal
6. Design (at least in short term) for coal - coal is dominant energy
source.
7. Design to reduce length of life of designed objects (more efficient ones
replaceing older ones more than makes up for difference in length of life).
etc .
Best wishes,
Terry

Subject: What would help you teach sustainable design?
Hello All,
Happy new year Ð I¹m looking for people who are teaching sustainable design
who¹d be willing to talk with me about their experiences and the materials
they use in teaching. (I¹m sorry if some people may have gotten this message
through other channels as well.) If you'd be willing to discuss these issues
with me further sometime during the next couple of months please email me
OFF THE LIST (ann [at] designers-atlas.net) to set up a time.
During the last 4 years, hundreds of people have downloaded the teaching
guide for my book ³The Designer's Atlas of Sustainability.² Many
universities use the book as a core element in sustainable design courses.
But I feel it's time to take stock of these and other materials that aim to
support teachers in sustainable design. I¹ll be making my findings available
to all, and ideally the process will lead in some useful new directions.
Many thanks,
Ann
