medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
My example is somewhat later, but may show how the language was being
shaped. When the Friars Minor Capuchins were formed in 1528, they referred
to themselves as "Friars Minor of the Eremitial Life."
Pope Clement VII, in Religionis Zelus of July 3, 1528, granted them
permission to lead the "eremitical life." In their "Ordinances of 1529",
the Capuchins required that in all of their residences, there be one or two
huts, separate from the main house, for those who wished to live as
"anchorites". The Capuchins stressed a contemplative life and, in the early
days of the Order, avoided getting involved in pastoral work, although they
were known for their ministry to plague victims. While they did not call
themselves "hermits" as such, they considered their poverty and
contemplative life-style "eremitical." Those who wanted to live a solitary
and silent life were called "anchorites," within the Order.
