Research Group Grammar – Logic – Rhetoric
Conceptions of Language at the Crossroads
of Scientific Disciplines and Social
Groups in Arabic-Islamic Culture (800-1100)
The Centre for Medieval Studies at
ALBERT LUDWIG UNIVERSITY FREIBURG (GERMANY)
invites applications for
one Postdoc and two PhD positions to begin March 1, 2012.
Contract is for an initial 18 months, renewable for two additional years upon
successful review. The Centre is seeking candidates with a strong
foundation in both
Philosophy (AOS: Classical Arabic Philosophy) and Islamic Studies to conduct
mentored research as fellows of the Research Group Grammar – Logic – Rhetoric.
The Research Group is conceived as an interdisciplinary contribution to the
history of ideas centered around the disciplines of grammar, logic,
and rhetoric in
Arabic-Islamic culture from 800-1100 CE. While the core of this enterprise is
dedicated to a historico-philosophical investigation of these
disciplines, they will be
contextualized by parallel inquiries into the historical, cultural,
theological, and
juridical spheres, as well as consideration of their social
significance (for details see
http://www.arabic-philosophy.uni-freiburg.de).
The successful candidate for the Postdoc position (E13) will hold a PhD in
Philosophy, have a strong background in the history of philosophy (particularly
Ancient and Classical Arabic), demonstrated competence in classical
Arabic, and a
strong research record. Her/his area of research will be the relation
of language and
law; accordingly, familiarity with early Islamic jurisprudence will be an asset.
Applications must include a CV, letter of application, project
proposal (please cf.
project description at the link indicated above), writing sample, 3 letters of
recommendation, and official undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
The successful candidates for the PhD positions (each 50% E13) will hold an
MA (or equivalent, including finished PhD coursework) in Philosophy,
have a strong
background in the history of philosophy (particularly Ancient and
Classical Arabic),
and demonstrated competence in classical Arabic. While one of the PhD
students will
focus on the language-related religious disciplines (particularly
grammar), the other
will investigate the relationship of language and theology.
Applications must include a
CV, letter of application, project proposal (please cf. project
description at the link
indicated above), writing sample, letter of recommendation, and official
undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
Albert Ludwig University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action
