medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: John Dillon <[log in to unmask]>
> In Latin there are a variety of spellings for this term, whose base meanings
seem to be "household stock" and, from that, "maintenance allowance". The
latter meaning occurs in a variety of contexts other than the ecclesiastical
one we've been discussing here. See Latham et al., _Dictionary of Medieval
Latin from British Sources_, s.v. _corredium_.
> The spelling _corrodium_ seems to be peculiarly insular; all examples of it
in the also lengthy entry in Favre's Du Cange, s.v. _conredium_ are from
English sources (the entry itself is at vol. 2, cols. 511-512; instances of
_corrodium_ are on 511, starting at the bottom of the middle column).
_Corrodarius_ occurs on the first column of col. 512 in the sense of "someone
who is given a living allowance" and (probably contrary to actual use) is
glossed as an equivalent (not said but perhaps understood: "but only in this
respect") of _Praebendarius_.
i don't have all of my chartrain cartularies digitized so that i can do a
comprehensive search, but the cart. for St. Peter's of Chartres is one of the
largest among them, and a search through it for "conrod*" turns up nothing;
one for "corrod*" turns up only one hit:
[p. 157, c. 1078] Si quis vero, diabolicæ pravitatis instinctu, huic facto
which seems to be an AlGore ("close, but no cigrar").
i just don't recall ever seeing such an arrangement referred to in the early
charters.
but, as John B. says, it seems to be a late middevil phenomenon.
