Dear Zooarchers -- If any bird experts are reading this, I have come
across the carpometacarpus of a swan that has "arthritis" of the wing
joint, i.e. exostosis covering the proximal end of the bone. I wonder if
anyone has seen anything like this previously, and I would also like to
ask whether this pathology could possibly be related to the bird having
had its wings clipped. The swan is of exceedingly large size and I am
inclined to suspect that it might have been hand-raised for purposes of
the table. A thought for Thanksgiving weekend, indeed. Cheers -- Deb
Bennett
