Dear Annelise:
On case that might interest you is the case of Telarmachay, an early
herding campsite at very high altitudes in Central Peru. There, the
remains of multiple young camelids, almost complete (early alpacas?)
suggested mass death from diarrhea from muddy corrals. The cause of
death was suggested by zooarchaeologist Jane Wheeler based on context,
age, and analogy with modern herd mortality, but has never been
directly confirmed. This might be evidence for early domestication and
is often cited, so it is worth considering. We'll welcome your
informed eye on this.
