The comparison to medicine is interesting. I just glanced at the faculty list for cardiology at the med school for East Carolina University (where I teach.) Sixteen people with MD degrees only, one with MD + PhD, and one PhD. (I'm in business with the one PhD. He's a psychologist who is an expert on the psycho-social aspects of implanted defibrillators.) The cardiology program is dominated by people with "practice" rather than "research" degrees. They all do research in one sense or another but their education is largely in practice and their research tends to be grounded in the concerns of MD cardiologists as opposed to those of PhD scientists.
