medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Maddy,
There was definitely a gallows in the precinct of Chartres Cathedral
during the Middle Ages, just to the south of the church and in front of
the Hotel Dieu. I believe, in fact, there may have been a second one
near the Bishop's Palace to the north of the cathedral, as well --
presumably in relation to a separate court. As for the bit about
corpses hanging until they drop off, I don't have a reference and may
have been influenced by Jan Potocki's novel and the subsequent film of
The Saragossa Manuscript. But I think it's basically correct.
Cheers,
Jim
