Hi Alison
For the time being, I'm bowing out of this discussion.
My last observation comes from a citation in my own thesis.
I quote Don, as follows:
‘[e]ffective visceral design requires the skills of the visual and graphic artist and the industrial engineer. Shape and form matter’ (Norman, 2004: 69).
I'm left wondering where the visual and graphic artist receives an education to support effective visceral design. Is a School of Art a reasonable suggestion?
Regards, Rob

I guess to
change design education in this way will take a generation or two, and for
me, there is still a balance to be achieved with, as Don says, not losing
the 'artistic' side of design in a drive to become engineers.
