Our Study Advice Service for students is clear in its message to
academic areas:
"Please emphasise to your students that we are not a 'proof-reading
service'. We will gladly teach them how to edit and improve their own
written work, but will not check through whole essays or look at the
same piece of work more than once."
So, general advice is given about how to proof-read your own work, but
they won't go through it all with you. Seems reasonable, teaching the
skills rather than doing it for them. I think this is the main
difference between an internal service and external - if you use an
external service you will most likely learn nothing.
Derek.

Agree with you, Mike, that this sort of support should be available but
when it is face to face support is it not given as advice with the
student then being asked to take it on board and go away and do the
changes themselves?
The fact that this ad identifies the subject matter of the assignment
could imply they are looking for someone who will also correct subject
knowledge. That is the implication that is of concern for me. If the
intention really were just to proof read then I'm of two minds about how
to view it.
As always it would be the proof of the offence that would be the most
difficult if it were to go to disciplinary.
