medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Christopher,
Perhaps this line of enquiry is barking up the wrong tree.
Serendipitously, I just started re-reading Benedicta Ward's Miracles and
the Medieval Mind, in which she deals with such visions of the Christ
Child in the Mass (pp. 15ff) as evidence of a new focus on the sacrament
of the Mass -- "not so much the 'body of Christ which is the church' as
'the body of Christ which is the host' " and the miraculous
transformation of the host during the Eucharist. She gives other
12th-century examples. Two references she gives might be of interest
to you:
P. Browe, Die Eucharistischen Wunder des Mittelalters (Breslau, 1938), and
L. Sinanoglou, "The Christ Child as Sacrifice," Speculum, 48 (1973), 492-509
Cheers,
Jim
