As the debate on the ‘into’, ‘in’, ‘by’, ‘for’, ‘through’, ‘what’, ‘how’ and ‘which’ of design research continues (see previous discussion on ‘Distinctions between different types of design research’), experience as a PhD supervisor has shown that candidates can sometimes be overwhelmed by the methods and methodologies available to answer what can be relatively straightforward (but substantive) research questions. I’d therefore like inform members of the forum about a web site that I’ve just launched to demonstrate the diversity of practice-led/based/focused/driven projects undertaken by the Design Practice Research Group at Loughborough Design School.
The site contains brief descriptions of 24 projects from the Group’s four research areas of Digital Modelling; Emerging Technologies; User-based Product Development; and Design Process Improvement. Each one-page case study identifies who led the project; what it involved; has an example of a substantive output (typically an academic journal paper); and, more importantly (for me at least), it includes images that give a feel for the designed outputs that were either undertaken by the researcher or participants.
The site is available at:
http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/lds/research/groups/design-practice/projects/
There’s a slight chance of the link changing in the future so, if this happens, it will be possible to access the site via the Design Practice Research Group’s homepage at:
http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/lds/research/groups/design-practice/
I hope that members find this new site of interest.
Thanks
Mark
