Maureen,

I don't think you are required to have patron and item barcodes starting

with different numbers, it just helps to prevent mix up of number

sequences when purchasing membership cards and item barcodes. Innovative

does have some settings for barcode validation, but this is for the

check digit at the end and it is only for some specific schema. As Mieko

says there is only one barcode index, so there are no settings saying it

is an item based upon the number of digits in the barcode.

What you are getting is correct behaviour, if you scan a 6 digit barcode

and it has the same first 6 characters as an 8 digit one I would expect

Millennium to throw up both records so that you can choose which is

which. We had a couple of similar problems, when membership numbers were

duplicated and when item numbers were duplicated. The best solution we

could find was to get rid of the duplicates

Subject: Barcode question

This is a longshot but thought I would ask. Our patron barcodes are 8

digits and some begin with 2...

Our item barcodes are 6 digits. We needed to order more and

inadvertently ordered 99,000 item barcodes beginning with a 2. Now we

have a clash of course when a book is returned with a 2 barcode which

matches 1st 6 letters of a patron record. I think when we implemented

Millennium we were told that patron and item barcodes could not start

with the same number. Is that right? Are there any settings which would

mean it would "know" by number of digits which was items and which was

patron?

Luckily we have only used 60 item barcodes so far but they were

expensive...

Many thanks

Maureen
