Dear All
As a 'summer' aside.
I assume we are talking here about the 'behind the scenes activity' of designers in science fiction movies but there is also the other side of the coin namely the way designers and designing are portrayed in movies and how this might inform our views of what designers are like as people and as to what they do.
One of Chris Frayling's particular interests concerns how movies have influenced the way we perceive scientists - as in white coats and deranged hair, etc! If I recall correctly the evidence suggested that movies were inclined to exaggerate the eccentricities and by so doing gave the public the impression that scientists were in many ways alien creatures. In a similar way I suspect that the portrayals of designers in movies [although less common] can similarly create a mythology. It would be good to collect together a catalogue of film depictions of designers and architects to discover whether this is or is not the case. A an example, 'The Belly of an Architect' Peter Greenaway [1987], not a jolly film but well worth a view!
