Dear list,
I wanted to add an observation from an ethnographic study into
professional design practice I am undertaking, that I think might be
relevant to this thread.
Perhaps there is a difference between measuring the impact of design
and measuring the impact of innovation. In one company I am
researching, they have an ongoing relationship with a particular
client out of whom they make a lot of money. In this case, the design
company gets very good margins so they want to continue delivering
their design work in exactly the same way. In fact there are plenty of
areas in which they could be more innovative but they do not want to
do anything that could jeopardize this income stream. In this case, it
appears that being able to charge high fees and making good margins is
in fact a barrier to innovation.
