>Today (29. August) is the feast day of:
>The Decollation (Beheading) of John the Baptist...A few images:

C.R. Dodwell (The Pictorial Arts of the West, 800-1200) notes (p. 74) that it
"is remarkable both as the only known Carolingian ms. to contain a series of
scenes of John the Baptist, and because its illustrations relate not to the
text but to the prefaces of the gospels."
he is following (p. 413, n. 173)
Bertrand Davezac, “L’évangeliaire de Chartres, BN. lat. 9386:
Contribution à l’étude de la peinture monastique carolingienne,” Cahiers
archéologiques, XXVII, 1978, pp. 39-60.
(my old prof here at Indiana, as it happens; write me off-list if you wish a
scan of this somewhat hard-to-acquire item)
Davezac's study is quite thorough.
the style of the scripts (2+ hands) "est incontestablement celui de l'école
de Tours," but excluded from Rand's catalog of mss. certainly from there, and
dating from the 2nd. half of the ninth c.
the quite curious figures (which were previously characterized as "peintures
grossieres") he finds "Loin d'être grossiers ou simlplistes, ils sont
puissants."
check their power out for yourself:
Evangelist symbols on ff. 13v-14, 64v, 67v, 146
Annunciation on f. 14v
Nativity -- 64
Traditio Legis -- 96
Passion de Jean-Baptiste -- 19
("un chef-d' œuvre de la miniature carolingienne...à tout point de vue
unique en son genre")
there's no accounting for taste, i suppose.
