Subject: Studio Based Learning SBL
I am currently doing some research based on the relationship (if any) between Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Studio Based Learning (SBL) in design education.
A widely held definition - that Studio-based learning is a shared learning environment in which ambiguous problems are addressed iteratively through multi-modal analysis, proposition, and
critique. Here, “ambiguous problems” are characterized as problematic situation (troubling, uncertain) with wide possibilities of problem engagement (knowledge-based, skill-based, artistry-based) and whose solutions are difficult to assess. The idea of “ambiguous problems” is immediately connected to “design” as a solution method, in that anything involving ambiguity in beginnings, means, and ends is a design problem.
There are also much views that SBL is in reality what the term suggests and is more just haptic strategies than pedagogy in design education.
Any opinions or research materials relative to SBL would be appreciated.
