Dear Colleagues,
Abstracts deadline: 26 July 2011
Please consider submitting an abstract and attending the next Geological
Society of America Annual Meeting.
http://www.geosociety.org/meetings/2011/
This year the conference will be in Minnesota and offers great
opportunities to visit the Archean nucleus of the North American
continent!

My colleagues, Christian Teyssier, Nikolas I. Christensen, James A. Conder
and myself will be co-convening Topical session T5 on "The Lithospheric
Anisotropy of Archean Shields".
This session, sponsored by the GSA Geophysics Division and the GSA
Structural Geology and Tectonics Division, aims to foster collaborative
research on the possible crustal and mantle origin(s) of this cratonic
anisotropy.
The origin of seismic anisotropy is relatively well understood for the
upper mantle, where elastic properties are related to olivine and pyroxene
fabrics, but is poorly known for the continental crust. Yet, the Archean
crust in many regions, such as the Kaapvaal craton or the Superior
Province, is characterized by rather large seismic anisotropies. This
could be related to grain-scale fabrics like in the mantle, or
larger-scale layering, or a combination of the two. The session will bring
together contributions covering seismic, field and rock fabrics studies.
Presentations on recent interpretations of Lithoprobe data and latest
results from EarthScope are also solicited.
To submit an abstract to this session:
