Hello,
Here is the round up of Twitter responses:
Out of fifteen replies from LISLINK and COFHE JISCMAIL lists only two
didn't tweet, primarily due to being blocked by firewalls or not having
time.
For those that do, several feed into the catalogue, the VLE , or the
homepage so all staff and students can see Tweets without having to be a
Twitter follower. They found this ideal for reducing barriers to access
but discovered that it does have the drawback of losing the measurement
of 'number of followers'.
Many don't have many followers, sometimes because of this; others find
Facebook more popular. A number use Twitter as current educational
awareness facilities rather than for LRC promotion.
Positives of Twitters:
* Good for posting opening hour changes and can be done from
home, several found this useful when the snow days occurred.
* Useful to be able to use # options to reach a wider College
audience.
* Useful addition to means of getting messages across to
students about resources, events, opening times, and so on
* Highly visible and visually appealing notice board for the
service
* Gives the opportunity to hear what students are saying about
the LRC. An example from one reply - "one student moaned about no
longer having access to a newspaper database. I saw the tweet and was
able to reply and suggest the student try a different resource who was
suitably grateful".
* Staff and students are already accessing Facebook and Twitter
so it is another avenue of keeping everyone up-to-date.
* Using rss feeds means that little time is spent repeating
messages.
Problems:
* Students are blocked from accessing social networking before
4pm.
* It is difficult to get the relevant target group signed up.
* Difficult to devote enough time to tweeting very regularly and
providing sufficiently interesting tweets.
* Difficult to measure impact.
* Occasional negative comments, including the LRC not being cool
enough to be on Twitter
Thank you for all your responses.
P.S. Hope you've booked your place at the CoFHE LASEC CPD event on 23rd
