Dear John,
Any user can choose how to stay in touch with the list: receiving
individual messages in their inbox or receiving a daily/weekly message
collecting the different threads in a single message. I think the
problem is not our inbox (it takes seconds to delete hundreds of
messages), but the overall quality of the list itself. Surely new
members are wondering why they have register at all!! And surely the
most qualified members of the list don't want to get involved in a list
where cranky ideas develop.
In the other hand, a "Don't feed the troll" policy (as it is popularly
known), usually is enough to halt these threads. I am sure there are
better ways of expressing the idea, but this graphic expression says
quite a lot.
(Obviously, I am not talking about Norse mythology...:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet) ).
Many of us have a lot to learn about tectonics and structural geology
from the more senior and experienced members of this community, and it
is frankly a pity to see it invaded by pseudoscientific topics.
It is in our hands. Literally!
Jorge
P.S. I actually miss the constructive side of the discussion about
continuum mechanics...

Perhaps it would be possible to find a mechanism whereby, after a
certain number of postings (3? 4?) by the same person on the same topic,
further messages on that topic could be transferred to a web site but
would no longer be distributed by email. A single email announcing this
could direct those who wished to continue the discussion to the web
site, while everyone else could ignore it. Not sure if this is
technically feasible, but it might help to keep all parties happy.
