I would assume that MOST filmmakers aren't nihilists as nihilism tends to be the minority view. It's a downer and quintessentially bad for box office. But artistically all the more interesting. How much frustration can be tolerated, and when does it itself become enjoyable?

Subject: Re: [FILM-PHILOSOPHY] Director who is not a nihilist
My candidate is Clint Eastwood
Hereafter is a true inquiry into the supernatural and the afterlife, and as Roger Ebert put it:
"Eastwood told me Morgan doesn't believe in an afterlife. I don't know if Eastwood does, either. His film embodies how love makes us need for there to be an afterlife. It is the film of a man at peace. He has nothing to prove except his care for the living."
Invictus is a traditional celebration of heroic effort and reconciliation
Gran Torino is the story of a crusty old codger overcoming his racism and caring so much for an Asian family that he is willing to die for them
His Pacific war diptych depicts nobility and self sacrifice on both sides
Million Dollar Baby is a touching depiction of the mentor role taken to its extreme
etc. ...
