medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Foundation charters are notoriously difficult to date - but Margam's must predate Robert Consul's death on 31 Oct 1147. It survives in an inspeximus by Hugh le Despencer. Cowley also references the Annales de Margan in Annales Monastici i p 14 (which I have to admit I don't have to hand!)
So Margam could possibly be a little earlier than 1147 but no later.

> Do bear in mind that early Cistercian history is highly controversial. The
date 1147 occurs far too often in Cistercian legend to be credible.
Bernie was apparently quite convinced --from a reading of the the [Pseudo-]
Sibylline Oracles-- that The End was At Hand in 1147 (one of the main reasons
why he pushed the 2nd Crusade so hard).
what other 1147 events in "Cistercian legend" do you know of, John?
