Just in case people start copying and pasting T & C's from other people's sites without thinking too much, I'd just like to point out they are copyright - so do try to use them as guides only. :-)
Because Oliver's original enquiry involves participatory work and UGC, the T&C's may need to consider the implications of original text from participators being changed, added-to or re-presented. This could mean the copyright state of the original text has changed, since it's been modified, edited or re-authored.
Other issues might include explicitly stating who actually owns copyright of the published UGC work, or commenter/participator's text. When working at Culture24 on a Culture Online UGC project, I specified [in the T&C's] that UCG authors shared copyright of published work with us, but retained copyright of their unedited text, as originally submitted.
The difficult bit happens when UGC content [even if only a short paragraph] is re-used out of original published context. That is likely to be unpopular with more traditional/professional authors; and it feels wrong to me too. As an author [of any sort] you like to know when your words have been published; personally, I had a bit of a problem with some aspects of how the BBC People's War project re-presented content in various ways.
Something else to consider in T&C's is what happens to content and copyright of third party text if the site is archived or deleted.
Whatever happens, IMHO UGC sites need to take care when specifying approaches to contributor content in T&C's. Naomi K is the expert; what does Web2rights say about this?

The T&Cs of the MA's website are quite comprehensive -

In terms of comments etc, the Guardian's T&Cs and also the BBC website offer good guidelines

Subject: Website T&Cs
Hi all
I'm looking for good examples of Terms & Conditions of use for an arts
community site aimed at 16-24 year olds.
On registering, users will be required to tick a box stating that they are
over 16 and have read the T&Cs. The site will encourage lots of interaction
and user generated content, so I'm particularly interested in legal
guidelines around appropriate use in this area.
Has anybody looked into this issue recently and come across useful models?
Many thanks for your help!
- Oliver
