Hi Louise,
we have been using encrypted memory sticks for some time now within our trust. They are working well in general and I support the need for them but occasionally they cause minor problems. We have one dedicated PC for users who do not have encrypted memory sticks (usually students and visiting staff) this "sheepdip" PC is not connected to the Trust network but allows all the normal functionality of an internet enabled PC, access to printers MS Office etc but no access onto any Trust network drives. We have introduced a booking system of 1 hour slots for this PC (our IT department would not allow us any more PC's like this one). It is a popular PC as they can open files and save work/assignments/presentations as well as save and print. Additionally they can open them at home as well. Security of patient information is not compromised. All Trust staff can apply for an encrypted memory stick authorised by their manager. We are going to introduce a new system in August for all new doctors whereby we issue the encrypted memory sticks at induction
Hope this helps
Regards

Subject: Encrypted Memory Sticks
Hi All
I'm wondering if anyone can provide advice on how they have dealt with the use of encrypted memory sticks in the library.
Our Trust IT department has said that from 1st April only encrypted memory sticks will be able to be used on PC's within the Trust. All Trust staff will need to order the memory sticks through the IT department which will then get charged back to the department of the member of staff. This is fine, however we have an IT suite which is used by medical and nursing students and PCT employees and other NHS staff who will not neccessarily have an encrypted memory stick or be able to order one.
Has anyone else been in this situation and how did you and your IT departments deal with it?
Many thanks
Louise
