Dear all,
I am a postgraduate student at the University of Cambridge who is
researching the UK's treatment of "gender asylum" claims (i.e., claims
in which the applicant fears persecution that is linked to her gender
such as domestic violence or female genital cutting). I am seeking
statistics on the number of these claims that the UK receives and
grants/denies annually. Ideally, I would like this information for two
time periods:
1. From 1988-98, i.e., the ten years prior to the House of Lords'
seminal decision of Shah and Islam, which recognized women as a
particular social group in a domestic violence-based asylum claim; and
2. From 1999-present, i.e. post-Shah and Islam.
However, even less comprehensive statistics on the UK's treatment of
gender asylum claims would be most welcome. The annual asylum
statistics released by the Home Office do not indicate the ground on
which claims were granted, making it impossible to tell whether asylum
seekers' claims were linked to their gender. Any suggestions where I
might obtain this information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance for your help.
