Hi Steffen
I suggest you put this out as a call on Visible Evidence listing. If you
Google Visible Evidence you should be able to get on to their list which
operates like this one.
I think there is quite a lot of research and writing out there and you will
be deluged with suggestions! Have a look at the work of David MacDougall,
Trinh T. Minh-Ha,
the book Truth or Dare, Art and Documentary editors Cahal MacLaughlin, Gail
Pearce for starters.
best wishes
Jill

Subject: [FILM-PHILOSOPHY] Documentary film and the aesthetic
Hello out there
I am currently undertaking a project dealing with the aesthetic potentials
of documentary film. Most writings and academic work on documentary still
seem to deal with concepts such as voice, representation, truth,
authenticity and ethical issues and very little with aesthetic value and the
composition, function and effect of the aesthetics forms in documentary
films.
What I seek is suggestions on:
1) academics who have already dealt with the aesthetic in connection with
documentary film. I am familiar with the work of Michael Renov, Laura
Rascaroli, John Corner and Björn Sorenssen but I would like to get other
suggestions.
and
2) further suggestions for ways to focus my research. I currently think of
three elements:
1 - an attempt to create a poetics of the aesthetic potential in three
different documentary modes; the essayistic, the poetic and the subjective
film
2 - undertake a study in the relationship between aesthetic form and
documentary's ontological status of dealing with something "real"
3 - the tendencies of contemporary documentary to make use of stylistics
traits from fiction film - how can this be understood in a
frame of reference aiming to look at documentary as an aesthetic experience
Hope this makes some sense and you can send me forward on my journey.
Many thanks
Steffen
