Dear Colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to the session “Tectonics of the Dinarides, Hellenides, and Rhodopes (GD5.3/TS6.11)” at the EGU General Assembly in Spring 2011 in Vienna. If you plan to attend the meeting and work in this part of the world please consider submitting an abstract to this session - the deadline is today!.
Over the past years, exciting new findings have fuelled heated debates on the evolution of the young orogens on the Balkan Peninsula. We believe they deserve a focused discussion and we hope to attract scientists from various fields.
Happy New Year!
We are looking forward to seeing you in Vienna,
Thorsten Nagel, Niko Froitzheim, and Jan Pleuger

Session description on EGU website:
We invite contributions on the tectonics of the Balkan Peninsula and the adjacent Adriatic and Aegean Sea from all research fields: neotectonics, seismics, geochemistry, thermo-chronology, structural geology, metamorphic and magmatic petrology, sedimentology, regional geology, and mechanical/numerical modeling. We are interested in subjects as (i) the distribution and geometry of seismic activity and the present day wedge mechanics, (ii) extension in the hangingwall of the subduction zone through space and time, (iii) the transition from continental to oceanic subduction in space and time, (iv) formation and exhumation of high-pressure and ultra-high-pressure metamorphic rocks (v) large magmatic events during orogeny, and (vi) the large scale slab mechanics.
