We used EXtrelut granules for a while but then changed to adding a scoop of Acid Washed Sand - this is suitably inert, holds the acid in a paste and has a colour which reminds you of summer days on the silver sands of the North West of Scotland. (Hope that image cheers everyone up!)

Subject: 24 hour urine preservatives; inert stabiliser
Dear Mailbase,
I wonder what you use to stabilise the preservative in your bulk urine containers?
For a long time we used EXtrelut granules*, but then a long time later we noticed that the urine calcium results were artifactually elevated by 6 mmol/l on average.
Since this discovery we have stopped using EXtrelut granules and send out the urine containers with just their liquid preservative (20ml of 5 molar HCL or 10ml of 5% NaOH)
We are worried about the risk to the patient where they may burn themselves whilst peeing directly into the container, especially as we don't provide a plastic jug.
I wonder what other laboratories do to stabilise urine preservatives in bulk urine containers?
I will collate the replies in a few weeks
Many thanks
Philip
